Black Spots On Wood In Attic

The following picture is of a long standing moisture condition in an attic where much of the roof sheathing has turned black.

Last winter i took a look into the attic and noticed black stains and water marks on a portion of the sheathing material. In the attic photograph at left we show a mix of green gray and white attic mold. When moisture condenses on plywood roof sheathing repeatedly or continuously the wood will turn black. If the dark surface of the wood smudges it could be mold.

Be sure to inspect the entire area to rule out the possibility of other fungi affected areas. Also inspect the cause of black fungi growth and fix it. Attic feels excessively hot or stuffy attics should feel breezy if they are properly ventilated. This summer i cleaned the portion of the black stain with a dry mop as much as i could reach from the hatch opening.

Mold species such as stachybotrys chartarum which looks like slimy growth loves attic basement bathroom and space under the sink black mold can also grow behind the walls or attic ceilings completely undetected until the occupants smell the presence or experience health problems. If the wood is soft if it s easily imprinted when you push on it it s probably rotten. Mold growing on the sheathing in your attic is a serious problem that shouldn t be ignored. Dark black staining on wood surfaces if the wood in your attic shows any black discoloration the problem has moved beyond moisture.

Black mold can be identified by its often slimy texture dark greenish black sometimes gray color and growth that appears as spots or patches that spread over time. Once you notice black fungi growing in one part of the attic there could be a probability that it has been spreading to other areas. In old houses you ll usually see some spots that are stained dark or black where there was a roof leak at some point in time which was repaired but the stain remains.
